Time to compromise over ‘Soca Warriors’ brand

Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, Senator David Nakhid is attempting to save the’Soca Warriors’ brand name for the Trinidad and Tobago football team. He stressed the importance of brand names when he said, “When you have a brand name that’s recognized internationally, you don’t just move on and start from scratch. That’s like erasing a legacy that a country has left.” He added that the ministry will be iron fisted with both Melville and the TTFA to get a compromise coming out of the meeting on Thursday.

Watts: Practical skills just as important as academics

Yesterday, the Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, the Honourable Phillip Watts recommissioned the Los Bajos Youth Development Centre. He said that it was more than giving youth employment but also to help empower them. Minister Watts also said his ministry was committed to making centres like Los Bajos' "engines of opportunity" for youth. To do this, he said the ministry has partnered with YTEPP under the YOUTEC programme, offering practical, income-generating courses and management "skills that young people can take to the market tomorrow and earn."

Upgraded: Los Bajos Youth Development Centre Recommissioned

The Los Bajos Youth Development Centre has received a much-needed upgrade, with expanded and updated facilities and services to match the changing technological landscape needed for the community’s youth to help them thrive.
Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Phillip Watts said the space is a symbol of the renewal of a promise that their futures matter. “When we speak about youth development, we are not only talking about creating programmes. We are talking about building lives. We are talking about developing skills that can unlock job opportunities, start a business, support a family, and change a community. And here in Los Bajos, we have seen the proof.”

Nakhid calls meeting to resolve Soca Warriors nickname

Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, Senator David Nakhid, in an effort to save the beloved nickname Soca Warriors, has called a meeting between the TT Football Association (TTFA) and ex-broadcaster Selwyn Melville. He wants the nickname to stay alive to keep a legacy intact.
He said, “It means everything to everybody in TT. It is a name that we have grown accustomed to. It is part of our brand.” “We went into the 2006 World Cup with that name and we have experienced enormous success with that name.” He further stated that the nickname is not just about sport, but it reminds the world of the genre of music that started in TT. “It is not only for sport, it is about culture.”
