Page 35

The Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, the Honourable Phillip Watts explained that work at the Diego Martin Regional Complex has stopped, and the project is under review. For that reason, that’s why there hasn’t been any allocation for the venue for the 2025-2026 fiscal year.

Minister Watts was asked for clarity on the status of the sports venue, as no money was allocated but His response was no.

Minister was also asked when the Basilon Street Youth Development Centre will be opened. His response went on to explain that the computers under the purview of the contractors were stolen and the building was not ready to be handed over.

‘Works halted at Diego Martin Sporting Complex pending review’

The Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, the Honourable Phillip Watts has confirmed that ongoing works at the Diego Martin Sporting Complex have been halted as the project is currently under review.

Minister Watts said that the decision to pause funding stemmed from the need for expert assessment on the next phase of the facility.

In Port of Spain, the Basilon Street Youth Facility remains closed to the public, with security and contractor issues delaying its opening.

Responding to a question from MP for Port of Spain South, Keith Scotland, on when the facility would be available for use, Minister Watts said that theft and incomplete works by the contractor have forced the ministry to hold off on taking possession of the building.

Turning to other infrastructure projects, the minister highlighted continued upgrades under the ministry’s social infrastructure portfolio, particularly at the Sevilla tennis courts and Dubisson Park in Ste Madeleine.
