On Saturday, Sport and Youth Affairs Minister, Phillip Watts, along with his team visited several recreational grounds in the Cumuto/Manzanilla area. These grounds were: Cunaripo, Coalmine, Housing Village, St Louis, Brooklyn Sangre Chiquito, Manzanilla, Plum Road, and Plum Mitan. It is understood that visits to these recreation grounds are to formulate plans to have at least one state of the art ground for football and cricket, respectively, in each region.

‘Nakhid: Foster must apologize to the nation’s youth’

Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, Senator David Nakhid, has accused Opposition Senator, Foster Cummings of betraying the nation’s youth during his time as former Minister of Youth Development and National Service. While giving his contributions in the Senate yesterday, he said that one programme from the 38 he went through, namely Fuse, costed $74,000 per student for 3 months. Senator Nakhid remarked that very few of those said programmes could have allowed young men and women to enter the job market. Cummings said the programmes were part of the PNM government’s youth policy to create training opportunities in a short time to treat with an immediate problem.

Watts probes $!9M Chatham youth centre refurbishment

With a $19 million contract already paid to a contractor for the refurbishment of the Chatham Youth Development and Apprenticeship Centre, Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, Phillip Watts is now questioning where the money went as the project is only 70 percent complete.

The upgrade which began in mid-2022, included the construction of new dormitories, the refurbishment of existing buildings, and the addition of a sick bay, laundromat, and general infrastructure improvements. While there were visible signs of work done, the compound was overgrown with bushes, strewn with animal droppings and plagued by incomplete fittings and exposed electrical work.

He stressed the importance of brand names when he said, “When you have a brand name that’s recognized internationally, you don’t just move on and start from scratch. Watts: Practical skills just as important as academics

Yesterday, the Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, the Honourable Phillip Watts recommissioned the Los Bajos Youth Development Centre. He said that it was more than giving youth employment but also to help empower them. Minister Watts also said his ministry was committed to making centres like Los Bajos' "engines of opportunity" for youth. To do this, he said the ministry has partnered with YTEPP under the YOUTEC programme, offering practical, income-generating courses and management "skills that young people can take to the market tomorrow and earn."

Nakhid calls meeting to resolve Soca Warriors nickname

Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, Senator David Nakhid, in an effort to save the beloved nickname Soca Warriors, has called a meeting between the TT Football Association (TTFA) and ex-broadcaster Selwyn Melville. He wants the nickname to stay alive to keep a legacy intact.
He said, “It means everything to everybody in TT. It is a name that we have grown accustomed to. It is part of our brand.” “We went into the 2006 World Cup with that name and we have experienced enormous success with that name.” He further stated that the nickname is not just about sport, but it reminds the world of the genre of music that started in TT. “It is not only for sport, it is about culture.”

The Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, Phillip Watts has bolstered TT’s sporting ambitions by presenting substantial funding to key athletic organisations (Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee(TTOC) and Trinidad and Tobago Triathlon Federation(TTTF)). The TTOC received $1 million towards the Junior Pan Am Games and the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Beach Games. The TTTF walked away with $647,920 for the Carifta Triathlon Championships.

Edwards: New name coming as proposed Soca Warriors deal…

The TTFA is likely to push ahead with rebranding the national men’s senior football team despite negotiations still ongoing. TTFA President, Kieron Edwards said that despite the meeting that took place with the Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, David Nakhid, TTFA first vice-president Mr. Colin Murray, and the trademark owner and his legal team, the situation remains unchanged.  Following the meeting, Senator Nakhid said there was great interest in having the matter resolved, however, Mr. Edwards said the two parties were still very far away from an agreement.

‘HOCKEY HURTING: Pan Am Cup no-show leaves players, staff uncertain of future

President of the Trinidad and Tobago Hockey Board (TTHB) Willard Harris said the board did everything within its power to ensure participation, but the situation eventually spiraled out of their hands. He explained that after applying for funding months in advance, the board kept following up with SporTT and the Ministry of Sport but faced prolonged delays. Mr. Harris also noted that coming down to the time last month, there was not any indication from the Ministry of Sport or SporTT that they were not going to fund the team’s participation in the tournament.

The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs yesterday laid the blame for the failure of the Trinidad and Tobago men’s and women’s hockey teams to attend the Pan American Cup in Uruguay at the feet of the Trinidad and Tobago Hockey Board (TTHB). A release from the Ministry stated that the TTHB has been non-compliant in submitting audited financial statements on time and has not yet submitted statements for 2024. It also said, ‘its failure to adhere to funding policies established by SporTT significantly hindered the funding approval process, resulting in delays that negatively impacted team preparations.’

The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs said the reason the TT Hockey teams did not receive funding in time to compete at the Pan American Cup is that the TT Hockey Board has been “non-compliant in submitting audited financial statements on time and has not yet submitted statements for 2024. The Ministry also said the TTHB only requested funding for the Pan Am Cup in early May. Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, the honourable Phillip Watts expressed his disappointment with the situation and noted that when sport governing bodies fail to address financial and compliance matters such as these, it is the athletes that pay the ultimate price.

The executive of the TTFA is expected to meet soon to evaluate a final counter-proposal from the representatives of veteran sports commentator, Mr. Selwyn Melville, owner of the Soca Warriors trademark. There seemed to be some hope of a resolution following last week’s meeting, where Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Sport David Nakhid served as arbitrator between the TTFA, represented by first vice-president Colin Murray and the trademark owner and Melville and his team. ‘Sturge: CCC is not being shut down… but says funding cannot continue without trainees’

The Minister of Defence, the Honourable Wayne Sturge has assured young people that the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) programme has not been shut down. His clarification came after reports circulated that 72 of the programme’s 114 employees will have their contracts ended on July 31. He also revealed that the CCC has not had an intake of students since January, while the Governement has been spending approximately $2.5 million monthly to keep the programme running. Minister Sturge met with Sport and Youth Affairs Minister, Phillip Watts to discuss the matter and the decision was made at that time. The CCC and other similar programmes are currently being transferred from the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs to the Ministry of Defence.

The absence of a SporTT board of directors has left several key national sporting concerns undone; however, Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, the Honourable Phillip Watts does not see this a major issue. Minister Watts said that recommendations were made but there should be something in place by next week.

The 2025 Youth Sport Camps, an annual facility provided by the SporTT company have also been mixed. SporTT CEO, Jason Williams said that organisers ran out of time to research and execute the camps. Mr. Williams further stated that in the interim, there are pre-existing programmes that will continue.

The Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) could see a change in its structure for the 2026 season. The change features an increase from three months to six months of the time the League is staged, courtesy of a proposal from Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, Senator David Nakhid.

This would facilitate one game per week, bringing back All-Star clashes, and more time for coaches from Europe to look at the players and coaches for them to get scholarships. Senator Nakhid remarked that this is a big step to holistic development.

‘Jereem, Keshorn spearhead World Champs medal hunt’

Jereem “The Dream” Richards and Keshorn Walcott will lead the Trinidad and Tobago medal hunt at the September 13-21 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

‘Competitive edge: Cabinet approves “Grandparent Law,” TTFA president pleased’

Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, the Honourable Phillip Watts, yesterday officially announced the introduction of the “grandparent law,” that will allow national teams to cast a wider net for talent.

At a post-cabinet news conference yesterday, Watts said Cabinet had approved an amendment to the Citizenship of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Bill 2025.

Minister Watts told reporters that Cabinet had agreed the bill “is to be introduced in Parliament at its earliest opportunity” and explained the change would allow people born overseas to acquire T&T citizenship if a grandparent was a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago at the date of their birth.

‘Cabinet Approves Citizenship Bill To Expand National Athlete Pool’

The Cabinet has agreed to approve the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, the Honourable Phillip Watts, also said that the Bill is to be introduced in Parliament at its earliest date.

He said the law will widen the pool of athletes available for all national sporting teams and referred specifically to the Trinidad and Tobago Senior Men’s Football Team.

Meanwhile, Trinidad and Tobago Football Association President, Kieron Edwards, agrees that the Cabinet’s approval of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill will aid all national teams. He believes the Bill will give the Senior Men’s Football Team a competitive edge ahead of their CONCACAF World Cup qualifying campaign.

When the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) walked out to play against the Barbados Royals in their last preliminary round if the CPL, one of their biggest fans, Adrian Cudjoe, was watching with a renewed sense of pride in the team.

Born with cerebral palsy, Cudjoe was initially not expected to live past the age of 5, but here he was, thriving at 27.

His devotion to cricket earned him the chance of a lifetime where while he was at TKR’s third home game against the Guyana Amazon Warriors, it was there the that the Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, The Honourable Phillip Watts noticed his patriotism and enthusiasm among the crowd.

The Minister arranged VIP tickets for TKR’s next two home matches as well has had a chat with Cudjoe on sport.
