‘Trinidad and Tobago sport stars advise NGBs at workshop’

The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs and SporTT are focused on advancing the cause of sport development. With this in mind, MSYA and SporTT invited representatives from 53 National Governing Bodies for Sport (NGBs) “for direct dialogue on their challenges and to determine the pathway forward for sport.”

The discussion took place on November 1 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo. NGBs were encouraged to work towards financial literacy and accountability, and advised of the benefits of compliance with reporting to their organisation.

The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs will soon conduct a comprehensive survey across all National Governing Bodies (NGBs) to benchmark governance standards and ensure best practices are upheld across Trinidad and Tobago’s sporting landscape.

Former professional boxer and Olympian Kirt Sinnette has been appointed Chairman of the newly-installed Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board of Control (TTBBC).

The five-member board was officially presented yesterday by Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, Phillip Watts, during a ceremony held at Nicholas Towers, Independence Square, Port of Spain.

Joining Sinnette on the board are Kim “Bonecrusher” Quashie, a former national boxer and current boxing coordinator, who will serve as Deputy Chairman; Kwanieze John, sport administrator; Hemrajh Rampersad, business administrator; and Bryan Basdeo, attorney-at-law.

THE Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) has been a major development tool for young footballers, but parliamentary secretary at the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs David Nakhid said playing over a three-month period is insufficient to allow the next generation to fulfil their potential.

Nakhid, a former national football captain, reiterated his views on TV6’s programme Morning Edition on November 5.

The 2025 Beach Games hosted by Special Olympics Trinidad and Tobago was a day of spirited competition that showcased the abilities of athletes from across the nation.

The athletes took part in six disciplines in the marquee event at Maracas beach on Saturday.

The Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs has announced the appointment of cricket legends Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard as official Ambassadors for Sport in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

In a release, the Ministry stated that the appointments reflect the Government’s commitment to “honouring outstanding national performers whose achievements inspire citizens and enhance Trinidad and Tobago’s global image.”

The DNA East/West Corridor Football League was officially unveiled as a major nationwide grassroots football initiative backed by government ministries, corporate sponsors and state broadcaster, TTT.

The league, conceptualised by Senator David Nakhid and businessman John Aboud, aims to reconnect football with communities, provide development pathways for young players and offer unprecedented prize money at the grassroots level.

Trinidad and Tobago will make history as the Olympic Committee sends a 50-member team to compete at the 2025 Bolivarian Games for the first time.

The Games are scheduled to be held in Ayacucho, Lima, Peru with the opening and closing ceremonies on November 22 and December 7.

The T&T contingent will compete in three sports—Men’s and Women’s cricket, cycling and surfing.

The Tobagonian, who is the co-founder of Zenith Athletic Club, coached and mentored many of this country’s Olympians and World champions.
